Thank you to the more than 120 individuals who joined us to celebrate CORAL’s 20th Anniversary and the launch of the CORAL Conservation Prize.
Your support left us invigorated, inspired, and hopeful. We were honored to share the evening with such passionate people who are working for the future of coral reefs. It is because of your wonderful support that we were able to commemorate this milestone in our organization’s history, and propel CORAL into the next 20 years with a party unlike any other CORAL has ever thrown.
Our focus now is on those next 20 years and the role that CORAL will have to play if we are to fulfill our mission of uniting communities to save coral reefs. Explore our website to learn more about our work, or make a donation to help save coral reefs around the world.
The CORAL Conservation Prize Winner
The inaugural CORAL Conservation Prize was awarded to Nyoman Sugiarta from the village of Bondalem in Indonesia. Nyoman’s community established a protected area for their nearby reefs; however, without any type of management system in place, the protected area–like many others–was ineffective. Nyoman, a fisherman, took on the responsibility of leading a team to ensure it would be managed well.
This has not been an easy job, as few people in his village understand the importance of coral reefs. Those who do are quite fearful about how their incomes will be affected if the reefs are protected. Nyoman and his team have raised awareness within their community, established enforcement, and generated alternative income for fishermen through the development of a fisherman dive center.
Nyoman traveled to the United States for the first time to attend our CORAL 20th Anniversary Gala to receive his award.
