Toronto Shark Ban Ruling Could Open Gates for Legal Fights in Other Municipalities

"The decision by an Ontario Superior Court judge to strike down the City of Toronto shark fin ban Friday will pave the way for challenges in other municipalities, lawyers involved in the case say.
“We were told this was a risky matter by our own solicitor,” Deputy Mayor Doug Holyday said Tuesday. “We had to show a municipal purpose for this and the biggest problem is there aren’t any sharks in Toronto.”
The city could launch an appeal in the next 30 days but Holyday, one of four council members to vote against the ban last year, including Mayor Rob Ford, said council can’t keep going against the advice of city staff. In doing so, he says, “it’s hampering the reputation of Toronto."
