With all the attention given lately to coral reef degradation, there has been some confusion, misperception, and even some outright misrepresentations over exactly why it's happening.  The view has been expressed by some that scuba divers represent a major factor in the decline of coral reefs.  Of course, divers are obvious targets for blame because, after all, our activities are so visible.  Given our intimate association with coral reefs, it's easy to assume that we're major culprits in their demise.  But that's simply not true.
