We are also creating a growing network of site-based trainers through the CORAL Reef Leadership Network [1] to expand the number of locations where sustainability training is available.

Training MPA Resource Managers

A well-managed MPA is one of the most effective ways local communities can preserve their coral reefs. By providing marine resource managers with the training and resources they need to improve management practices and develop sustainable financing opportunities, CORAL is supporting an important asset in the struggle to preserve these special places.

Educating Marine Tourism Operators and Tourists

Experts agree that when tourists are given informative briefings about their impact on these fragile ecosystems, the resulting positive behaviors reduce damage to the reefs. By empowering dive and tourism operators to distribute this vital information, CORAL greatly reduces negative impacts on a reef community while providing opportunities for economic growth based on healthy sustainable tourism.

Engaging the Local Community

Local populations are directly impacted by the health of coral reef systems in their region. Facing economic pressures and limited resources, communities often engage in destructive practices like overfishing or unmanaged development. The imbalance these practices cause can result in the destruction of the community’s greatest natural asset. By working with local residents to help them better understand the dangers of continuing destructive activities as well as opportunities for improvement, collaboration, and more beneficial alternatives, CORAL preserves the integrity of the local culture and improves the condition of the marine environment. CORAL provides the expertise and insight needed to meet regional challenges and ensure sustainable business practices and benefit sharing.
