"Ocean Shore's Oceans Week theme developed this year from the work of the Institute for Figuring, a Los Angeles-based organization that created The Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef to draw attention to the fragility of coral reefs.

The Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef is an exhibit that melds mathemathics, marine biology and art. Created as a response to the environmental problems of plastic trash in the ocean and of global warming, it is currently on display at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History and has traveled around the world to art and science museums.

An Ocean Shore fourth grader, Sophie Green, and her mom first noticed the work and brought it to the attention of her teacher, Sheila Gamble-Dorn. They began crotcheting their own colorful coral reefs. Before long, Sophie had convinced others to participate. Last week, the work of many hands was apparent as all the yarn work displayed together created the appearance of coral reefs."
