Because of this, the area has been designated a priority conservation site by the U.S. Coral Reef Task Force and the Hawai\u2018i Department of Land and Natural Resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\">But West Maui is laden with historic sugarcane and pineapple plantations that are now out-of-use. During heavy rain events, the soil from these degraded landscapes travels down old dirt roads, enters stream gulches, and ultimately reaches the ocean where it smothers coral reefs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\">Stormwater runoff is considered a major source of water pollution and has led to a 25-50% decline in Maui\u2019s coral cover in the last fifteen years. It also regularly causes the Hawai\u02bbi Department of Health to issue \u201cBrown Water Advisories\u201d, which are warnings to the public to avoid swimming or fishing because of risks to human health.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer is-style-large\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignfull has-light-sea-green-to-june-bud-gradient-background has-background is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:8.33%\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Reconnecting with the &#039;Aina to Save Coral Reefs in Hawai\u2018i\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6hkuXDur9nw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:8.33%\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer is-style-large\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"our-work\">Our Work<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Our mauka to makai (ridge-to-reef) approach restores the natural function of an ahupua\u2019a (watershed), so that chemicals, nutrients, and sediment are naturally removed from stormwater before they reach the ocean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\">Toward the top of the mountain and in the midslope region, we use native plants\u2014and over 100 supportive volunteers\u2014to restore the degraded landscapes and trap the sediment before it has a chance to runoff into the ocean.
