{"id":1915,"date":"2021-02-03T16:06:30","date_gmt":"2021-02-04T00:06:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/coral.org\/news\/talking-story-about-mauis-coral-reefs\/"},"modified":"2021-09-23T08:46:39","modified_gmt":"2021-09-23T15:46:39","slug":"talking-story-about-mauis-coral-reefs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/coral.org\/en\/blog\/talking-story-about-mauis-coral-reefs\/","title":{"rendered":"Talking Story About Maui\u2019s Coral Reefs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last month, we were honored to be selected by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) as a recipient of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfwf.org\/media-center\/press-releases\/nfwf-celebrates-20-years-coral-reef-conservation-announces-12-million-new-grants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coral Reef Conservation Fund<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> grant, our second in as many years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The grant supports <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/coral.org\/maui\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">our restoration projects in West Maui<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Hawai\u2018i where we\u2019re planting native plants along stream banks and degraded agricultural lands to keep land-based pollution out of the marine environment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9615 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/coral.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Maui-volunteers.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"940\" height=\"788\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During rain storms, sediment and nutrients run off the fallow sugarcane and pineapple fields into the ocean where they smother coral reefs. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/coral.org\/blog\/plant-a-tree-save-a-coral\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The native plants help stabilize the steep slope<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and trap sediment in situ.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On January 21, 2021 we were honored to participate in NFWF\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get to Know the Grantees<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> webinar for all grant recipients. This year\u2019s theme was Maui Nui Coral Reefs and we joined some of our partners and fellow grant recipients, like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westmauir2r.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ridge to Reefs, Inc<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. and Maui Nui Marine Resource Council, to share our knowledge about what is happening to Maui\u2019s coral reefs and how we can partner with other organizations to save them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt is really great being part of this community of practitioners and having the space to learn from our partners in Maui Nui,\u201d says Jen Vander Veur, CORAL\u2019s Senior Program Manager in Maui. \u201cThis webinar paved the way for scaling our impact through future collaborations on other islands, like Lanai and Molokai.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9616 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/coral.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Wili-Wili.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"940\" height=\"788\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last month, we were honored to be selected by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) as a recipient of the Coral Reef Conservation Fund grant, our second in as many years.\u00a0 The grant supports our restoration projects in West Maui, Hawai\u2018i where we\u2019re planting native plants along stream banks and degraded agricultural lands to&hellip;
