After postponing last year\u2019s event due to COVID-19, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iucn.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">International Union for Conservation of Nature<\/a>&nbsp;(IUCN) decided to hold its quadrennial&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iucncongress2020.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">World Conservation Congress<\/a>&nbsp;from September 3 to 11, 2021 and commit to actions that will ensure a more sustainable future.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Members from more than 160 countries in government, science, civil society, and business sectors met in Marseille, France\u2014along with many more participating virtually. One of those attendees was CORAL\u2019s Hawai\u02bbi Regional Program Director&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/coral.org\/dive-in-with-manuel-mejia\/\">Manuel Mejia<\/a>, representing the Hawai\u02bbi Conservation Alliance, an IUCN member organization and previous host to the 2016 World Conservation Congress.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/coral.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/hawaii-delegation-2-1024x683.png\" alt=\"Hawaii Delegation, IUCN World Conservation Congress\" class=\"wp-image-4192\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.coral.org\/uploads\/2021\/09\/hawaii-delegation-2-1024x683.png 1024w, https:\/\/static.coral.org\/uploads\/2021\/09\/hawaii-delegation-2-796x531.png 796w, https:\/\/static.coral.org\/uploads\/2021\/09\/hawaii-delegation-2-768x512.png 768w, https:\/\/static.coral.org\/uploads\/2021\/09\/hawaii-delegation-2-600x400.png 600w, https:\/\/static.coral.org\/uploads\/2021\/09\/hawaii-delegation-2.png 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We had a chance to catch up with Mejia after he returned from Marseille, getting a \u201cbehind-the-scenes\u201d look at the main highlights and why there are reasons to be optimistic.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>More Indigenous Voices&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Previously, Mejia attended the 2016 Congress that took place in Honolulu, Hawai\u02bbi, where a new membership category called the \u201cIndigenous Peoples Organizations\u201d was formed. Since its establishment, Mejia has noticed a significant increase of individuals from the Indigenous Peoples Organizations represented at IUCN.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIndigenous voices are finally being elevated and listened to,\u201d says Mejia, expressing the importance of taking a biocultural approach to conservation. \u201cIn the Pacific, and in Indigenous cultures in general, people are part of the equation. They aren\u2019t separate from nature. As nature thrives, people thrive.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the Congress, Mejia proudly represented our partners in Hawai\u02bbi at the \u201cPacific Pavilion,\u201d where members living in Oceania and the Pacific Islands spoke about topics relevant to their region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/coral.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/2-Manuel-IUCN-1024x683.png\" alt=\"IUCN World Conservation Congress\" class=\"wp-image-4194\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.coral.org\/uploads\/2021\/09\/2-Manuel-IUCN-1024x683.png 1024w, https:\/\/static.coral.org\/uploads\/2021\/09\/2-Manuel-IUCN-796x531.png 796w, https:\/\/static.coral.org\/uploads\/2021\/09\/2-Manuel-IUCN-768x512.png 768w, https:\/\/static.coral.org\/uploads\/2021\/09\/2-Manuel-IUCN-600x400.png 600w, https:\/\/static.coral.org\/uploads\/2021\/09\/2-Manuel-IUCN.png 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Mejia gave a presentation and shared the significance of \u201cmauka to makai\u201d conservation approaches in Hawai\u02bbi, or \u201cridge to reef.\u201d He explained why taking care of land and sea is an important element to local cultures and island communities, like Hawai\u02bbi, and how communities are leading conservation efforts guided by Indigenous values and knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Reconnecting with the &#039;Aina to Save Coral Reefs in Hawai\u2018i\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6hkuXDur9nw?start=1&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>New Steps to Combat Climate Change<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Climate change was also an important topic at this year\u2019s event. During the Congress, the Union made great progress by establishing the first official \u201cClimate Change Commission\u201d within IUCN\u2014a motion widely led and supported by members of the Hawai\u02bbi Delegation, including Mejia.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iucncongress2020.org\/motion\/003\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a statement&nbsp;<\/a>released by IUCN, \u201cA climate crisis commission with a single focus to implement a unified plan to save the earth\u2014providing a venue for those who wish to be part of the final stand\u2014will protect future generations, Indigenous people and nature.\u201d This new establishment will contribute to the worldwide effort to reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to the planet\u2019s changing climate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This decision was a major victory for the Hawai\u02bbi delegation, as they feel firsthand the impacts of climate change to the Pacific. \u201cSmall islands are the canaries in the coal mine,\u201d says Mejia. \u201cThey are the most vulnerable frontliners when it comes to climate change impacts.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A Call to Action&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a whole, Mejia felt this year\u2019s Congress took an \u201call hands on deck\u201d approach to conservation\u2014with a strong sense of inclusion, collaboration, and dedication.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/coral.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/IUCN-1.2-1024x683.png\" alt=\"IUCN World Conservation Congress\" class=\"wp-image-4196\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.coral.org\/uploads\/2021\/09\/IUCN-1.2-1024x683.png 1024w, https:\/\/static.coral.org\/uploads\/2021\/09\/IUCN-1.2-796x531.png 796w, https:\/\/static.coral.org\/uploads\/2021\/09\/IUCN-1.2-768x512.png 768w, https:\/\/static.coral.org\/uploads\/2021\/09\/IUCN-1.2-600x400.png 600w, https:\/\/static.coral.org\/uploads\/2021\/09\/IUCN-1.2.png 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>From&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=TENJVvLda-U\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Harrison Ford\u2019s passionate speech<\/a>&nbsp;to presentations by youth conservationists to the involvement of the Marseille community, people from so many generations, backgrounds, and countries joined forces to seek nature-based solutions. Even French President Emmanuel Macron gave a speech, demonstrating his leadership in tackling climate change and expressing the importance of protecting nature\u2014as our well-being depends on it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recent reports and studies all show that there is a dire need for real change. But Mejia is optimistic and sees this as an opportunity to come together and amplify meaningful conservation efforts. In the words of Harrison Ford, \u201cWe\u2019ve got to get to work.
