It\u2019s called an aquaponics system, and it combines aquaculture and hydroponics to raise fish and grow organic fruits and vegetables.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An aquaponics system relies on a symbiotic relationship between fish and plants. Fish waste fertilizes the growing plants and in return, the plants filter and clean the water for the fish. <a href=\"https:\/\/coral.org\/en\/blog\/aquaculture-an-alternative-to-overfishing-in-honduras\/\">CORAL started an aquaponics project in Tela Bay, Honduras<\/a>, and in the last year we\u2019ve created the conditions for both native fish and plants to thrive and investigated new ways this system could support the local community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"How Aquaponics Can Support Coastal Communities\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/aKgJ0BTD5QM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Could an Aquaponics System Benefit Coastal Communities?&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>In Tela Bay, Honduras, Los Micos Lagoon suffers from overfishing, which impacts the health of nearby coral reefs and the quality of fish caught by local fishers. Over the last year, we\u2019ve been testing to see if aquaponics could promote food and income security for these coastal communities, which rely so heavily on fishing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cultivating aquaponics systems within the community has the potential to reduce fishing pressure in the lagoon and allow marine environments to rest and recuperate. Native fish from the system can also be released into the lagoon, which could help restock dwindling populations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year, Julio San Martin Chicas, CORAL\u2019s principal program coordinator for the North Coast of Honduras, has monitored Tela\u2019s first aquaponics system and is researching what it can successfully produce. By 2023, he will start educating the community and working with local fishers who are interested in creating their own aquaponics system.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Can an Aquaponics System Produce?&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>An aquaponics system has the potential to grow a wide range of plants\u2014like tomatoes, hot peppers, strawberries, leafy greens, among others. But for the best results, San Martin Chicas focuses on growing produce that can survive naturally in the region, without any chemicals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t use chemicals or pesticides as this could harm the fish, tamper with the water quality, and impact human health,\u201d says San Martin Chicas. \u201cIt is safer to focus solely on organic fruits and vegetables.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently, he started growing hot yellow peppers, known locally as \u201cchile cabro.\u201d The pepper can be eaten whole, in salads, or blended into a spicy salsa or hot sauce.
