It\u2019s why we work with local communities, scientists, and partners to protect Tela Bay and its natural resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most recently, we collaborated with local partners to finalize a management plan for Tela Bay\u2019s Wildlife Refuge, a marine protected area that often suffers from the impacts of overfishing. The plan was recently approved by the government and will now act as a new tool to protect Tela\u2019s coral reefs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Was Tela Bay\u2019s Management Plan Established?&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Back in 2017, Tela Bay was declared a marine protected area (MPA). But unfortunately, officials didn\u2019t have the guidance or resources to truly preserve the bay effectively. That\u2019s why we helped the Tela Bay Technical Committee, a local group made up of NGOs, governmental organizations, scientists, and community members, develop a management plan for the refuge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe management plan is a result of the determination and dedication of our local community in Tela, who care deeply about protecting their resources,\u201d says Julio San Martin Chicas, CORAL\u2019s principal program coordinator for the North Coast of Honduras.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A fisheries plan, which the committee created to indicate sustainable fishing regulations in the region, was used as a base for developing Tela Bay\u2019s full management plan. In addition to providing guidelines for healthy fisheries, the management plan now offers information on how to manage tourism, respect local customs and values, encourage environmental education, and more.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTogether, our goal is to offer guidance to officials so they are able to enforce regulations, support the livelihoods of communities, and ultimately protect Tela Bay,\u201d says San Martin Chicas. \u201cEstablishing a plan will bring us one step closer to saving the region\u2019s coral reefs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Coming Together to Save Coral Reefs\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WtojKuaHwQ4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What\u2019s Next?&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>What happens next is crucial. Across the globe, so many MPAs, like the Tela Bay Wildlife Refuge, are only protected <a href=\"https:\/\/marine.wildaid.org\/looks-good-on-paper-addressing-the-problem-of-paper-parks\/#:~:text=In%20the%20marine%20context%2C%20a,goals%20effectively%20(Slezak%202014)\"><strong>on paper<\/strong><\/a>\u2014but they aren\u2019t properly managed in real life due to lack of enforcement, education, funding, or resources. Our work at CORAL is to ensure communities have a feasible plan in place and can effectively manage their MPAs and minimize the human impact.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2023, we will work to secure funding in order to implement the actions from Tela Bay\u2019s management plan, which in turn will protect the area\u2019s fisheries and coral reefs. From there, our scientists, partners, and community leaders will observe the bay, measure the effectiveness of new actions, and monitor the health of our beloved coral reef ecosystems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/coral.org\/save\"><strong>Join us <\/strong><\/a>in supporting our on-the-ground staff and local partners in Tela, Honduras.
