Hope that Corals in the Great Barrier Reef Can Adapt to Rising Ocean Temperatures
In 2016, CORAL launched the Coral Adaptation Challenge, bringing together three working groups of prominent coral experts to investigate the probability that reef-building corals can adapt to rising ocean temperatures by the year 2100. A paper published in PLOS Genetics by some members of one of the working groups has a hopeful message: some corals in the GBR can adapt to rising ocean temperatures for the next 100 years.

Endangered Species Day- Elkhorn Coral
May 19 is Endangered Species Day! CORAL is highlighting Elkhorn coral (Acropora palmata), a coral that has suffered severe losses since the 1980s primarily as a result of disease and coral bleaching. Once a keystone reef-building species found across the Caribbean, it is now listed as "Critically Endangered" by the IUCN. Learn about CORAL's work in Tela Bay, Honduras to protect one of the last remaining healthy Elkhorn populations in the Caribbean.
