Protected areas create a safe haven for coral reefs and other marine life, reducing direct threats and helping reef ecosystems survive rising ocean temperatures.
The Challenge
Only 6% of the world’s coral reefs are in well-managed protected areas that successfully mitigate threats like overfishing and land-based pollution.
Protected areas need reliable financing, enforcement, science-based planning, and community engagement to work effectively. Without proper funding and management, coral reefs are vulnerable to overfishing, pollution, and the impacts of climate change.
What We Do
We work with partners to create and strengthen protected areas worldwide. This includes developing community capacity, using science to inform management, and supporting local patrolling and enforcement.
